Thoracic spondylitis

Thoracic spondylitis
Back pain is a common condition and the leading cause of disability worldwide. Its intensity varies from person to person, and it’s considered chronic if it lasts more than 10-12 weeks.
As people grow older, factors like occupational strain and degenerative disk disease increase the risk of developing lower back pain. This condition may involve the lumbar spine, intervertebral discs, surrounding ligaments, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, internal organs in the abdomen and pelvis, or even the skin in the lumbar region.
Thoracic spondylitis Causes
- Aging and degeneration – As we age, the spinal discs in the thoracic region dry out and lose flexibility, usually starting around 40. This can lead to bulging discs, a key sign of thoracic spondylosis.
- Bone spurs – Aging can also cause bony growths (spurs) on the vertebrae or facet joints, which may contribute to pain and stiffness.
- Thickened ligaments – Over time, the ligaments that support the spine can become thicker and stiffer, leading to discomfort and restricted movement.
- Not just for older adults – While thoracic spondylosis is more common with age, younger individuals can develop it due to injuries or excessive strain on the spine.
- Lifestyle factors – Being overweight, staying in poor posture for long periods, or engaging in repetitive activities that strain the spine can increase the risk.
Thoracic spondylitis Symptoms
- Middle back pain – Often caused by compressed nerve roots due to herniated discs, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments.
- Worsening pain with posture – If the pain is due to a herniated disc, it may get worse when sitting and bending forward for long periods. If caused by facet joint osteoarthritis, the pain is usually worse when standing and improves with sitting or bending forward.
- Pain in the arms and legs – This may happen when compressed nerves in the thoracic spine extend into the limbs.
- Weakness, numbness, and cramping – Nerve compression can lead to these symptoms in the legs or arms.
- Severe cases – In rare instances, spinal cord compression can cause coordination and balance problems.
